Decoration Ideas for an Ancient Greece Party

An Ancient Greece theme is brilliant and offers real scope to transform a whole room into a magical time capsule from history. This section includes ideas for colour schemes, drapery, lighting effects, props, and foliage that will help create this magical atmosphere!

Colour Themes for an Ancient Greece Theme

Here are some ideas for colour palettes that would look gorgeous:

  • Sage, white, and gold
  • White and yellow or gold
  • Sage, peach, and gold
  • Sand yellow and peach
  • Peach and sage
  • White, terracotta orange, and sage

Draping for an Ancient Greece Theme Party

To create an instant visual effect in a space, nothing works quite like draping. Beautiful, classy whites and neutrals are perfect for this theme. They combine a classic and old-fashioned look with a beautiful Mediterranean aesthetic. Think about:

  • White cotton/linen/natural fibers
  • Floaty chiffon-style draping in neutrals

It would be gorgeous if you interspersed a few sprigs of foliage or golden strands of synthetic foliage into the trailing fabric. Laurel leaves or similar, sage-colored plant strands are perfect.

Creating decorated doorways is a great way to add greenery into the decorations, and doorways are such a high-impact place to decorate as walking through them gives you a feeling of interaction with the decoration, leaving a much greater impression!

Acropolis entrance frame: this would be a fantastic motif for the entrance to this party – a cut-out of the entrance to the Acropolis!

Lighting Decorations for an Ancient Greece Theme Party

Lighting is one of the biggest ways you can transform the feel of a space and create your perfect party atmosphere.

To create an Ancient Greece theme, a perfect lighting strategy will nod to the old, candlelight tone while keeping a modern, celebratory visual effect.

Here are some lighting ideas that play on the warm, bright Mediterranean theme:

  • Festoon lights everywhere (while not Greek, these have a beautiful Mediterranean feel and will suit the theme perfectly)
  • Up-lighting in warm glowing yellow-orange shades, creating an effect similar to candelabras or oil lamps from those times. These are light places on the floor, directed upwards at the ceiling. You can use regular light bulbs or LEDs to create this effect or even regular lamps shining upwards, casting warm glows over the walls.
  • Candlelight. Wherever safe and possible, solid, thick candles on terracotta dishes or inside glass jars for safety will create a brilliant Greek-style effect, creating a warm and magical interior. This will look stunning for evening parties once it gets dark.
  • If you have a dance floor, mirror ball effects could also work brilliantly with this theme. They’re visually beautiful, energetic, and simple, in keeping with the theme.
  • A haze machine could add depth and mysticism to the space, creating a real transient experience back in time.
  • If you have a projector setup, it could be fun to have images of famous greek statues or of a sunset view over the acropolis to create a magical atmosphere and transport people to the place itself!

Props for a Greek Mythology Themed Party

Props and statues would be a fantastic way to add mythology and symbolism to the Greece-themed party. You can do this in so many ways, with little statues, pictures, chalkboard illustrations, and paper or card cut-outs.

Projecting these symbols onto walls would also have a fantastic effect if you’ve got the means.

Greek Mythology Plinths

Columns topped with Greek-style decorations, from sculpture of reek gods, goddesses and mythological characters, to the symbols of the elements and skills over which they preside. For instance:

  • Zeus: Thunderbolt
  • Hera: Peacock
  • Poseidon: Trident
  • Demeter: Sheaf of wheat
  • Athena: Owl
  • Apollo: Lyre
  • Artemis: Bow and arrow
  • Ares: Spear
  • Aphrodite: Dove
  • Hephaestus: Hammer
  • Hermes: Caduceus
  • Hestia: Hearth
  • Dionysus: Thyrsus (staff tipped with a pine cone)
  • Centaur (Chiron): Bow and arrow
  • Cerberus: Three-headed dog

These would also make incredible white neon signs!

For example:

“Know thyself.”
Delphic Oracle (Often attributed to Socrates, but the Delphic Oracle of Apollo was known for this maxim.)

“The unexamined life is not worth living.”
Socrates (A key figure in Greek philosophy, though not a mythological figure, his ideas were influenced by Greek mythology.)
