Minion Theme Game Ideas

1. Frozen Minions

This game is like musical statues—children dance to music and when the music stops, they have to freeze! Encourage them to do the silliest, most minion-like dancing they can manage—this is also a great way to help them burn off some energy. You can either reward the most frozen minions or call out the funniest frozen positions.

2. Minion Mission

In this game, the facilitator shouts out the actions below, and children must follow the instructions for each action. The last ones to follow the actions are out, and the game continues!

  • Goggles on! – Pretend to put on Minion goggles
  • Silly dance – Arms out, children do a silly dance, being cheeky and ultra-silly just like minions
  • Shrink Ray – Kids curl up on the floor in a tiny ball , pretending they’ve been shrunk
  • Banana time– Children run to one side of the room shouting ‘banana banana banana’!
  • Apple time – Children run to the other side of the room shouting ‘apples apples apples’!

This is a fun, high-energy game, perfect for getting kids moving. You can simplify it for younger children by using fewer actions or reward the fastest minion instead of eliminating players.

Pro tip: If you don’t want to send kids ‘out,’ you can send them over to jump into a giant imaginary pile of bananas! They’ll love making a big splat sound, and it’ll get plenty of laughs from the rest of the group.

3. Minion Minion Banana

This game is similar to duck duck goose but with a Minions twist. It’s perfect for when children are arriving or during a quieter moment. New players can easily jump in, and the game is simple and fun.

Children sit in a circle, facing inward. Child A walks around the outside of the circle, gently tapping the group one by one on the head, saying “Minion, Minion, Minion…” then chooses one child (Child B) to say “Banana!” Child B jumps up and chases Child A around the circle. Child A must run around the whole group and sit back in Child B’s spot. If they manage, Child B becomes Child A for the next round. Otherwise, Child A has to try again!

4. Gru’s Footsteps

In Gru’s Footsteps, one player is Gru and stands at the front of the room with their back turned, while the rest of the players (the Minions) start from a distance and try to sneak up on him. When Gru’s back is turned, the Minions move forward, but if Gru shouts “Minions, Freeze!” and turns around, the Minions must freeze.

If Gru catches anyone moving, that player must return to the starting line. The first Minion to sneak up and tap Gru without getting caught wins and becomes the new Gru for the next round.

Minion Activity Ideas

1. Minion Training Course

Before the minions can undertake their important missions, they need to go some training! A little obstacle style challenge part of the party is perfect to get the kids burning energy by doing something physical, and also great fun!

We suggest setting up 3 or 4 stations around the room, with a grown-up or helper manning each one. The idea is for the Minions to practice their skills with fun, game-like activities! Split the group into smaller classes of 4 or 5 kids, and let them rotate through the training stations.

Here are some station ideas:

  • Brick Toss: Have the kids toss yellow and blue Lego bricks into a minion basket! Use any bucket/bowl/basket and print out a minion face to stick on it! You could make this extras funny by having a few baskets at different distances from the kids and having different minion expressions on each (unimpressed for the close basket but huge smile for the far one etc).
  • Sneaky Minions Relay: Kids practice sneaking and racing as they crawl, roll, or tiptoe from one end of the space to the other. Minions are pretty cheeky and they need good practise!
  • Gru’s Balance Challenge: Use masking tape to create a line on the floor for the kids to balance along without stepping off. This is essential for a quality minion mission!
  • Banana Jump: Practice long jumps by marking out targets with masking tape for them to jump to without touching the floor in between. Make this ultra silly by having them hold a banana as they go!

2. A Minion Mission (Scavenger Hunt Style)

It’s time for the minions to be sent on a special mission! Can they work together to complete a special minion retrieval challenge?! Set the kids off with a story of a challenge they have to solve. You can make up anything that is personal to what the birthday kid loves (like ice cream rescue or puppy rescue) or use our example below!

Here’s a story you can use: “Dear Minions, we’ve lost our precious bananas! They’ve been hidden around this [house/garden/room] by the evil villain, and we need the best Minions to retrieve them. But there is a problem! We need to find them before the evil villains come home! There are [12 bananas] and we only have [6] minutes. Are you up for the challenge?”

To make the mission even more fun, dim the lights or give the kids flashlights. Add extra suspense with a time limit. Hide either real bananas or pictures of bananas around the room (or a mix of both!).

You can even print out “Wanted” posters of missing bananas to make it creative and extra exciting!

3. Minion Piñata

A piñata is a party classic and it creates so much joy and suspense at any party! Fill a Minion-shaped piñata with sweets and hang it up from a height. One by one, blindfold the kids and let them take turns whacking it with a stick to release the goodies!

There are lots of minion pinata options available online making this super easy to prepare!

4. Minion Craft Activity: Decorate Minion Headband!

Crafts are a brilliant addition to a party because they are a lovely peaceful energy moment in what can otherwise be very energetic fun!

Craft activities work really well at times when kids might dip in and out at different moments, for instance as guests are arriving or as children peel away from the snack table at different speeds.

For this craft activity, cut white strips of card as head band and leave out colourful pens and markers for kids to draw their own minion goggles on! They can then wear the headband for a super cute group photo after!

There are so many simile craft ideas for a minion theme, so depending how much the birthday kid loves to craft, check out this Pinterest board full of different minion headband ideas.

Minion Decoration Ideas

1. Big Bunches of Balloons in Colour Themes!

Balloons are bold, affordable, and they create so much energy in a space. They’re particularly useful because you can arrange them at different heights around the room, flooding the space with themed decoration.

Great colour combos for a Minion balloon garland:

  • Yellow, Blue, and a few White and Black
  • Yellow, Purple, and Blue
  • Bright Yellow, Light Blue, and Orange

We also recommend eco-friendly balloons, since they’re disposable…but their disposability also makes for a very simple clean-up!

2. Minion Photo Prop Background!

We love recommending clients go all out with decorations for one focal table or one corner and make that the backdrop for birthday photos.

One focal area is absolutely enough for an evocative and elaborately decorated feel while keeping the planning, set-up, and clean-up to a minimum. You can use a movie banner as a backdrop, or a very affordable minion-themed backdrop (these are inexpensive on Amazon or other online retailers).

To bring the adorable minion characters to life, it could be fun to get some life-size cutouts of minions (also inexpensive online) for kids to pose next to. You could also create photo-prop minion characters with face cutouts so kids can pose behind them and get photos of their heads on minion bodies.

Making this a photo station also makes it interactive—and therefore much more impactful and memorable!

3. Minion Fest Tables!

Set up food tables with minion-themed tablecloths, plates, and cups. This will add fun, colorful theme into the functional party of the party! It’s inexpensive to buy sets online, and any interactive decoration has a much bigger impact on the kids.

There are plenty of options to explore online—choose one that fits your party style, be that blue and yellow, or little minion characters or banana patterns!

4. Minion Energy Background Music

Music is key to setting the scene!

Luckily, the Minion movies have catchy tunes that the kids will love. We suggest playing the iconic songs from the films as the kids arrive and perhaps during games that involve music, such as musical chairs or freeze dance.

Additionally, have some background music to create a playful and energetic atmosphere. This is one of the best hacks for setting a themed vibe, and it doesn’t cost a penny!

Food Ideas for a Minion Party

The best tip for food ideas is to keep it simple and stick to what kids love. To make the food experience more fun and minion-themed, here are some ideas to add a little excitement to the snack table:

1. Minion Cocktails

Make jugs of your child’s favorite juice and give them fun minion-themed labels like:

  • Banana Blast
  • Minion Power Punch
  • Yellow Fizz Juice
  • Banana Bonanza Brew

2. Minion Yellow and Blue Cupcakes with Fun Toppers

Creating cupcakes with cute toppers is a great way to introduce theme onto the food table. For a perfect Minion aesthetic, we suggest yellow icing with blue accents (have a mix of the two on the platter) and fun toppers!

The toppers could either be edible (like blue sprinkles or fondant minion faces) or inedible decorations like mini cardboard minions stuck in with cocktail sticks that can be easily removed before the kids dig in! An extra cute idea is to use blue cupcake liners for an even greater ‘minion’ effect.

3. ‘Minion’ Themed Jelly

Jelly is a crowd and party favorite, and a bright yellow jelly, such as lemon, will be perfect to customize for a minion theme! It’s so easy to prepare ahead of time, meaning one less thing to worry about on the day.

Create a big bowl of yellow jelly, adding in edible glitter, as well as sprinkling glitter on top for an even more sparkly effect! Just before serving, sprinkle the top with additional edible blue stars!

Another more adventurous idea would be to layer yellow and blue jelly, starting with jello and adding a very thin blue layer on top! This involves two setting stages, but is quite simple to do (there are plenty of online tutorials for this!)…perfect for the theme!

This will be a delicious snack and look absolutely spectacular, perfectly in keeping with the theme! You might even want to consider com carboard minion character toppers to stick in with cocktail sticks (and remove easily before the kids tuck in!)

4. Minion-Themed Popcorn Lucky Dip

Popcorn is always a party hit, and you can customize it to fit your minion theme. Make yellow popcorn by adding food coloring to the syrup coating (there are loads of recipes online for how to create colorful popcorn!) and finish it off with drizzles of white chocolate coloured blue wiht natural food dye.

Create a lucky dip by mixing the popcorn with yellow and blue lucky dip sweets, for instance:

Cut up banana-flavored laces, yellow gummy bears, blue raspberry candies, and chocolate-covered raisins!

Good Luck!

I hope these ideas help get your imagination flowing and get you feeling excited about your little one’s Minion party! This is such a fun theme, you already know it is going to be a hit with the kids, and the rest is all a bonus!

The best advice I can give is to keep it simple and focus on fun and laughter—there is no need to stress about the little details.

You’ve got this! Don’t forget to take plenty of photos as memories of this special day!

Best of luck!
