Welcome to this awesome unicorn party post, where I am about to share with you the best, creative ideas for games, activities, snacks and decorations!
I’m Zoe and I worked as a party host for over 8 years! So with my experience and love for all things creative, I’m here to share some of the best tried and tested tips and hopefully make your life easier for you!
Alright, let’s dive into creating this magical unicorn extravaganza!
Top 5 Tips for the ultimate unicorn party
Before we dive in, let me share my top children’s birthday party tips:
- Use music to create a magical atmosphere
- Take the children on an adventure story and let their imaginations run wild
- Simple decorations are enough! No need to spend a heap
- Keep the kids engaged by using physical games and activities
- Get one or two other parent to stay and be on hand to help yourself for peace of mind!
In this guide, I will share ideas for music playlists, a DIY adventure story, and budget-friendly decoration ideas. Plus, I’ll suggest a range of active games that will keep the kids engaged and ensure everyone has a fantastic time.
You really don’t need to spend a fortune! What sticks in children’s minds are the wonder and excitement and creativity- not the Pinterest-style details 🙂
Game Ideas for a Unicorn Birthday Party
1. Unicorn statues
This game is like musical statues- children dance to music and when the music stops they have to freeze! Encourage them to do the craziest dancing they can manage- this is also a good strategy to get them burning as much energy as possible. You can either reward the most frozen statues or call out the funniest frozen positions.
2. Unicorn-land bustle
In this game, the facilitator shouts out the actions below and children must follow the instructions for each action. The last ones to follow the actions are out and the game continues!
- Magical woods – Children run to one side of the room
- Sparling lagoon – Children run to the other side of the room
- Unicorn gallop – Children gallop up and down like a pony
- Magic sprinkle– Arms outstretched and flutter fingers as though magic is coming out of them
- Unicorn roll – Children lie on their backs and wiggle like horses having a scratch
This is a fun, high concentration and physical game- you can always take out one of two of these actions to simplify it for younger children, or reward the fastest child to avoid having to send people ‘out’.
Pro tip: If you don’t want to upset children by sending them ‘out’ you can send them over to jump into the massive imaginary pile of jello! Squelch!!! Children will enjoy making a big squelching sound and dramatic jump- it makes everyone else laugh too.
3. Pony Pony Unicorn
This game is similar to duck duck goose but with a theme. It’s a great one to play as children arrive (or as children might get tired of lunchtime at different rates) as new players can easily join and it’s fun and familiar to them.
Children sit in a circle facing inwards. Child A walks around the outside of the circle and gently taps the group one by one on the head as they pass saying pony, pony, pony…..then, they choose one child (child B) to say unicorn! Child B jumps up and chases Child A around the circle. Child A has to run around the whole group and sit back in Child B’s space. If they manage, Child B becomes Child A in the next round. Otherwise, Child A has to play again until they succeed.
4. Unicorn’s stables
This is a unicorn themed version of musical chairs, children dance in a circle around two rows of chairs (stables) back to back with each other. When the music stops children must find a chair to sit on.
There should always be one (or two) fewer chairs than children, meaning those who don’t manage to get one, are out! Then, chairs are removed and the music re-starts for round two!
There are two winners of this game- those who find a seat when there are 3 children and 2 chairs left. This is a fun, energetic game!
5. Pin the horn on the Unicorn
This game is a classic, and you can easily make your own version or buy a pre-prepared on inexpensively. Because this blog is international, I am suggesting an amazon pre made set but you could check local Etsy shops- there’ll be so many options.

Best Activity Ideas for a Unicorn Party
1. Unicorn Adventure Story
We have written a unicorn story about a group of magical unicorns who use their powers to spread healing, nature and joy! We’ve included it for you as a FREE download below!
Make this section super engaging and get the children on board, and involved in pretending to be a part of the magic. Get them to wiggle their healing power fingers. Get them to shake music out fo their magical horns!
If they were creating a toy garden- what toys would they plant for a never-ending supply! Have them plant magic toy seeds!
2. Unicorn Craft Activity
A craft activity is a really nice thing to do for a bit of downtime during a party. I often suggest it as children arrive. That way they can get involved straight away and having something to do can make integrating easier for children who are a bit shy at first. It’s also a lovely take-home gift.
Make your own unicorn mask!
We have found these awesome mask templates that you could give the children to decorate with felt pens, and maybe some sticker jewels, feathers or glitter glue! This is a fun activity and kids will love playing with them for the rest of the party.
Decorate your own unicorn goody bag!
I got inspired for this idea by these gorgeous horse themed party favor bags on my friend’s blog, and thought it would be perfect to adapt to a unicorn theme!
To do this you can add a horn instead of a fringe, and adding glitter, stickers and rainbow-coloured crayons to the craft table!
These personalised goody bags can then be filled with candies to take home at the end of the party- how cute!
Music & Soundtrack Ideas for a Unicorn Party
Music and soundtracks really make the atmosphere at a party and so or this one, we have a Spotify playlist recommendation, for mystical, ethereal tunes: Fairy Magic by Derek Fletcher!
Alternatively, if you don’t have Spotify, this Youtube music has a similar vibe.
Unicorn Party Decoration Ideas
-1. Shiny colored balloons in big bunches!
Instantly transform the space with themed color balloons! Create bunches in pinks, purples, and blues mixed with silver and tie them around the room. Consider eco-friendly options like these eco-balloons on Amazon. They can also serve as take-home presents for guests!
2. Large unicorn wall hangings
Hang disposable-themed tablecloths as large wall hangings around a central table. They are an inexpensive way to add color and atmosphere to a space and you can use blue tack or press pins to stick them up easily. We love this sparkly rainbow unicorn option!
3. Decorated Food Tables
Set up food tables with unicorn themed tablecloths, cups, and plates. It will really add to the atmosphere and it’s also functional! We think this gorgeous set is a very affordable deal– it even comes with a headband for the birthday girl and golden ribbon! (the same sellers also offer a cheaper one with fewer additional accessories)
4. Magical Background Music
Magical background music will create excitement and really add to the atmosphere! It might seem odd as a decoration tip- but trust me! See our suggestions in the music section above.
Cute Food Ideas for a Unicorn Party
The best tip for food ideas is to keep it simple and keep it to food that children will love. To get the most out of the food experience, here are our ideas for adding some sparkle and creativity to the snack table!
1. Unicorn creation cocktails
Make jugs of your child’s favourite juice but put on fun labels like ‘unicorn healing potion’, ‘magical powers cocktail’!
2. Unicorn color platters
This is a really fun way to make a food table loop spectacular!
- Pink – pink biscuit wafers, Haribo love hearts, breadsticks or crackers in pink hummus, pink hummus sandwiches, strawberry jam sandwiches, pink and white marshmallows, red grapes, strawberries/raspberries, pink popcorn, watermelon, ham and salami and cheese on crackers/bread, grapefruit.
- Purple – blueberries, blackberries, dark red grapes, blackberry jam sandwiches, you can use natural food coloring to dye any dips like hummus or cream cheese, for crackers. It also looks really pretty to make light purple icing or purple melted white chocolate and drizzle over wafer biscuits or any white sugary deserts like white chocolate coated pretzels, marshmallows, and finger biscuits.
- For silver accents- drizzle melted white chocolate over any biscuits, wafers or fruits and cover in silver sprinkle balls or edible glitter- this will go down a treat!
- For rainbow accents- drizzle melted white chocolate over any biscuits, wafers or fruits and cover in silver sprinkle balls or edible glitter- this will go down a treat!
3. ‘Imagination’ themed Jelly
A really fun thing to do for a party is make a huge bowl of jelly and fill it with themed sweets inside! For a unicorn party, you could make a light purple jello and fill it with Haribo love hearts.
You can also get little plastic figures online and put one of two inside the jelly – just be sure not to accidentally serve up on the day!
4. Cute individual veggie cups
Individual little holders for veggies and or fruit or popcorn are a really fun way to serve food. For a princess party, you could use gorgeous little pink cases, each with a couple of carrot/celery sticks, some grapes and some cucumber- check out this page on amazon for inspiration.
5. Popcorn lucky dip
Pop corn is a really fun party food that children love and can be easily customised to fit a theme. See this recipe here for pink popcorn- you can make this any colour by adding different colored food colourings and once you’ve poured the syrup onto the popcorn you can also sprinkle with multicoloured or silver and gold sprinkles.
You can also make a popcorn lucky dip (a total hit with all my nieces and nephews at parties) where you mix popcorn with part themes sweets such as jelly love hearts and multicoloured smarties.

Good Luck!
I hope these ideas are enough to get your imagination flowing and give you some vision for how the unicorn party could unfold! The best piece of advice I can give, is make things simple, and focus an a imagination magic rather than little details.
You can absolutely do this! Be sure to take heaps of pictures of the special day- these are ones you’ll want to cherish! Best of luck! Zoe x
